In a tragic turn of events that shook the community of New London, Connecticut, 18-year-old Arisleidy Batista, a young Hispanic female, was killed on the evening of January 26, 2022. The incident unfolded in an apartment on Granite Street, where police and firefighters responded to reports of gunfire and a fire around 8 p.m. Inside the burning apartment, first responders made a grim discovery: the bodies of Batista and her 20-year-old boyfriend, Nikeuri Rodriguez.
Investigations by the
state's chief medical examiner later revealed the tragic event to be a murder-suicide. Arisleidy Batista died from multiple gunshot wounds to her head, torso, and extremities, and her death was ruled a homicide. Nikeuri Rodriguez was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Authorities also determined that the fire in their apartment had been intentionally set.
Friends and family of Batista revealed that the young woman, who had immigrated from the Dominican Republic and recently graduated from New London High School, had been planning to end her relationship with Rodriguez.
