On August 23, 2016, a tragic fire in a South Shore apartment building in Chicago took the lives of four people, including three young children. Among the victims was seven-year-old Shaniyah Staples. The fire broke out at around 1:37 a.m. and quickly engulfed the three-story building on South Essex Avenue, forcing residents to flee through windows due to the thick smoke filling the stairwells.
