On May 26, 1869, Michael Baer, aged 31, was fatally shot while serving as Chief of Police in Fort Smith, Arkansas. At the time of his death, he was accompanied by a sheriff's deputy as they investigated a gang of horse thieves operating in the area. The two officers were traveling along the Little Rock Road, approximately 10 miles east of Fort Smith, when they encountered a group of three men.
