In the winter of 2023, a life was tragically cut short in Fort Smith, Arkansas, leaving a community in mourning. Fifteen-year-old Bailey Smith, a male with a reputation for having a big heart, became the victim of a fatal shooting on the evening of Wednesday, December 6th. The incident unfolded on North 36th Street, where a dispute among teenagers escalated into violence.

According to those who knew him, Bailey was attempting to intervene in a large fight and protect his girlfriend when the shots rang out. He was struck multiple times in the chest, back, and wrist. A second individual, Bailey's 12-year-old brother, was also wounded in the shooting but was expected to survive his injuries. Bailey, however, succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead. Friends and family remembered him as a handsome young man who was always willing to help others and knew how to make people laugh.

In the wake of the shooting, Fort Smith police quickly identified a suspect, another 15-year-old named Connor Castillo. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder and first-degree battery. The Sebastian County prosecutor pursued the case, and ultimately, Castillo pleaded guilty to the charges. In February 2025, a judge sentenced Connor Castillo to a total of 40 years in prison for his role in the death of Bailey Smith and the injury of his younger brother, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the Fort Smith community.
