On the night of April 28, 1901, George Claud Holt Pickett, a 37-year-old patrolman with the Pine Bluff Police Department in Arkansas, was fatally shot while conducting his first night patrol in the downtown area. At approximately 1:00 AM, after all businesses had closed, Patrolman Pickett, along with two fellow officers, approached two suspicious men at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Pine Street.
