In the late summer of 1904, a sense of duty called upon City Marshal William Wesley Rainbolt, a 48-year-old lawman serving the community of Forrest City, Arkansas. On Saturday, August 20th, a report of a man brandishing a pistol set in motion a chain of events that would end in tragedy. Marshal Rainbolt, along with Chief Deputy Sheriff William Murphree of the St.
Francis County Sheriff's Office, responded to the call, a task they had likely undertaken countless times before in their commitment to uphold the law and protect the citizens of their town.
The pursuit of the armed individual led them towards the Iron Mountain Railroad depot, a bustling hub that would soon become a scene of violence. As Marshal Rainbolt closed in on the suspect, the situation escalated dramatically. An exchange of gunfire erupted between the lawman and the wanted man, the sound of shots piercing the air. In the chaos, both Marshal Rainbolt and the suspect were struck and wounded. The confrontation drew the attention of another deputy who, arriving at the scene, fatally shot the suspect as he lay on the ground.
The aftermath of the shootout was grim. Marshal Rainbolt, gravely injured, was taken to his home. Despite the efforts to save him, he succumbed to his wounds approximately two hours later, leaving behind a wife and three children. Chief Deputy Murphree was transported to a local drug store, where he too passed away shortly after midnight. The life of William Wesley Rainbolt, a man who had served as the elected city marshal for two years, was cut short in a violent encounter, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who wear the badge.
