In the autumn of 1925, a tragic event unfolded in Texarkana, Arkansas, that would cut short the life of Miller County Sheriff Elisha Franklin Barber. On Friday, October 30th, the 51-year-old male sheriff, known as 'Lish,' and his Chief Deputy Bob Smith were called to a local business to meet with three individuals. The men they were meeting were the former police chief of Texarkana and his two sons.
What began as a conversation escalated into a heated argument, shattering the peace of the day with the eruption of gunfire.
In the ensuing violence, both Sheriff Barber and Chief Deputy Smith were fatally wounded. In the exchange of bullets, one of the suspects was also shot and injured. The aftermath of the shootout led to the immediate arrest of all three men, who were subsequently charged in connection with the murders that had stolen the lives of two of the county's top law enforcement officers.
The path to justice saw the former police chief convicted for his role in the deadly confrontation. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sheriff Barber and his deputy. In the wake of his untimely death, Sheriff Barber was survived by his wife and two children. In a testament to her strength and the community's trust, his wife stepped in to serve out the remainder of his term as sheriff, carrying on his legacy of public service.
