On October 30, 1925, Chief Deputy Robert D. Smith, aged 37, was fatally shot in Texarkana, Arkansas. He and Sheriff Elisha Franklin "Lish" Barber were summoned to a local business to meet with three individuals: the former police chief of Texarkana and his two sons.
