In the autumn of 1932, a dedicated lawman named J. C. Crain, a Deputy Sheriff with the Miller County Sheriff's Office, was involved in a fatal encounter in a rural area of southern Miller County, Arkansas. While attempting to apprehend a known bootlegger, Deputy Crain and his partner, Deputy Melvin Brackman, were met with sudden and violent resistance.
