In the winter of 1935, a sense of duty called upon Deputy Sheriff Park Franklin Williams as he patrolled Greene County, Arkansas. At 34 years of age, he had dedicated three years of his life to law enforcement, earning the respect of his community. On Wednesday, December 18th, his commitment to protect and serve would tragically cost him his life.
While on duty, Deputy Williams approached an 18-year-old youth to question him in connection with a robbery.
The reported crime was minor, involving a mere 15 cents and a pocket comb. However, the encounter took a fatal turn when the young man, whose name was not publicly released, produced a gun and shot Deputy Williams. The deputy succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a wife and nine children.
The aftermath of the shooting saw swift action from the justice system. The 18-year-old suspect was apprehended and faced the consequences of his violent act. On May 18, 1936, he was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Deputy Sheriff Williams. The court imposed a sentence of life in prison, closing the case on the untimely and tragic end of a dedicated lawman's life.
