On September 25, 1948, 23-year-old Arkansas State Trooper Algin Sidney Pavatt was fatally shot near Summit, Arkansas, while investigating a series of burglaries in Marion County. During a search of remote cabins, Trooper Pavatt and four companions approached a suspicious individual standing near one of the cabins. The man, later identified as a 23-year-old AWOL soldier named Kenneth D. Speegle, opened fire with a rifle, killing Trooper Pavatt.
