In the late summer of 1957 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a dedicated public servant named Lustachia Browder, a 67-year-old male Deputy Sheriff with three decades of service to his community, would confront a peril that would tragically end his life. His death on Sunday, September 15, 1957, was not a matter of chance but the violent culmination of his unwavering commitment to upholding the law.
The series of events leading to Deputy Browder's death began the night before, with a raid on a
local nightclub. During the operation, at least one individual managed to evade capture. The following day, Deputy Browder located this suspect and attempted to make the arrest. In the course of this confrontation, the suspect managed to stab Deputy Browder in the chest.
The struggle did not end there. The suspect then overpowered the veteran deputy, gaining control of his service weapon. He proceeded to shoot Deputy Browder twice, inflicting the fatal wounds. In the immediate aftermath, the suspect fled the scene, leaving the fallen officer. However, his freedom was short-lived. Later that same day, the man responsible for the death of Deputy Sheriff Lustachia Browder turned himself in to the authorities and was apprehended.
