On February 3, 1977, Lieutenant Edward Lee "Ed" Worrell of the Texarkana, Arkansas, Police Department responded to a burglary alarm at Howard's Discount Center on North Stateline Avenue. Upon arrival, he and Patrolman James "Butch" Clark were ambushed by 15-year-old John Lohbauer, who was acting as a lookout while his two accomplices burglarized the store.
