In the quiet community of Jefferson, Arkansas, a horrific act of violence unfolded on March 25, 1998, forever scarring the lives of a local family. Five-year-old Sean Michael Sorg, a young boy, was among the victims of a mass shooting that claimed the lives of four others inside a mobile home. The male child's life was cut tragically short alongside his mother, Shelly Marie Erwin Sorg, who was 24, and his three-year-old sister, Taylor Nicole Sorg.
Also killed in the rampage were their 20-year-old cousin, Misty Dawn Erwin, and a 12-year-old family friend, Samantha Marcia Dianne Rhodes.
The devastating discovery of the five bodies prompted an immediate and intense investigation, which quickly pointed to one individual: Clay King Smith. Smith was identified as the ex-boyfriend of Misty Erwin. Reports indicated that the relationship had a history of domestic abuse, with Erwin having previously reported Smith to the authorities before withdrawing her complaint. On the day of the murders, Smith entered the shared mobile home armed with a rifle and carried out the fatal shootings of all five individuals.
A manhunt for Smith ensued, culminating in a tense standoff with law enforcement near Star City in Lincoln County. During the confrontation, Smith made incriminating statements to the authorities, reportedly saying, 'I sent three of them to Heaven, and two to Hell.' The standoff ended when Smith was shot in the arm by police and taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Clay King Smith was charged with five counts of capital murder. In a move that surprised some, he chose to waive his right to appeal his conviction and death sentence, expressing a desire to not prolong the suffering of the victims' families. He reportedly wrote letters to the families asking for their forgiveness. Smith was executed by lethal injection on May 8, 2001.
