In the summer of 2014, a quiet neighborhood in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was disrupted by a grim discovery that left the community in shock. On the morning of July 11th, the bodies of 62-year-old Anthony Branch, a male, and 58-year-old Deborah Moncrief were found inside Moncrief's residence on Cowboy Drive. The couple, described by neighbors as friendly and often seen walking their dogs, had their lives tragically cut short in what investigators quickly determined to be a targeted act of
violence.
The initial investigation into the double homicide pointed away from a random act, with law enforcement believing the motive was related to money. As authorities delved into the case, interviewing family, friends, and neighbors, a primary suspect emerged. The focus of the investigation soon centered on William Cody Childress, a 21-year-old man from Mississippi. In a somber twist, Childress was the fiancé of Deborah Moncrief's niece, Jessica Moncrief.
Within a day of the discovery of the bodies, investigators located Childress and his fiancée. Following an interview with law enforcement, Childress reportedly led them to the weapon believed to have been used in the killings. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder. Authorities stated their belief that Childress acted alone in the commission of the crimes. He was held without bond at the W.C. 'Dub' Brassell Jefferson County Adult Detention Center as the investigation continued, leaving a community to mourn the loss of two of its members.
