First responders were dispatched to an apartment in the 300 block of California Street, where they discovered the body of 23-year-old Marshal Turner. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. The initial account of the event, provided by those present, suggested that Turner had taken his own life.
However, as investigators from the
Marianna Police Department delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, inconsistencies in the narrative began to surface. The occupants of the apartment, 20-year-old Matayo Artist, who resided at the address, and an unnamed 17-year-old, were brought in for questioning. Under the pressure of the investigation, their initial story of suicide crumbled. The two young men turned on one another, each accusing the other of being the one who pulled the trigger.
The investigation revealed that after the shooting, Artist and the juvenile had allegedly conspired to cover up the crime.
