On a February afternoon in 2018, the life of 18-year-old Demarco Jhere Taylor, a Black male, was cut short in Conway, Arkansas. The incident, which marked the city's first homicide of the year, unfolded at a home on Bernard Drive around 5 p.m. on February 15th. Initially, law enforcement responded to what was reported as a home invasion. However, the narrative of a random act of violence quickly dissipated as investigators learned more.
Demarco, who was known to the homeowner, had been
invited into the residence. He was not alone and was accompanied by another individual. Once inside, what was supposed to be a familiar encounter took a grim turn. Authorities reported that Demarco attempted to rob the resident, leading to a fatal confrontation. In what the homeowner described as an act of self-defense, he shot Demarco. The second person who had arrived with Demarco fled the scene and police were investigating to determine their identity.
When officers arrived, they found Demarco Taylor deceased from a gunshot wound. The homeowner was questioned by the Conway Police Department, but no immediate charges were filed in the wake of the shooting as the investigation into the claim of self-defense continued.
