In the early evening of June 3, 2020, a tragic incident unfolded in Bryant, Arkansas, leading to the death of 36-year-old Scott Anderson Hutton. A newly appointed police officer with the Alexander Police Department, Hutton had gone to the residence of a fellow officer to pick up a patrol car at the start of his shift.
What was meant to be a routine exchange took a fatal turn.
At approximately 7:12 PM, Saline County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a home on Evergreen Drive, where they discovered Hutton outside the residence with a gunshot wound. Another Alexander police officer was at the scene administering life-saving measures. Hutton was quickly transported to a Little Rock hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting was handled by the Arkansas State Police. It was determined that the other officer, identified as Calvin Salyers, was holding a firearm when he responded to Hutton at his door. As Salyers was opening the door, the weapon discharged, and the single round struck Hutton.
Following the investigation, Calvin Salyers was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of his fellow officer. Scott Hutton, who had served two tours in the United States Army National Guard before realizing his dream of becoming a police officer, was survived by his wife and other family members.
