On January 1, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Jymal Cox. The incident took place early in the morning, around 5:56 a.m., in the area of 1601 Blue Hill Avenue. Boston Police responded to the scene and found Cox, who was pronounced dead at the site. Additionally, a second man was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries; he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The shooting is
believed to have been triggered by a dispute over a spilled drink during a New Year's Eve gathering. Reverend Kevin Peterson, the founder of the New Democracy Coalition and a cousin of the victim, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Peterson, who is an advocate against violence, stated that the family is 'saddened that we begin the first day of this year on a feeling of loss'.
Jymal Cox was described by family and friends as an outgoing man who loved life. He leaves behind two young children, a daughter and a son, and a mother who is in shock over his death. The community has been affected significantly by this incident, with residents expressing concerns about the increasing violence in the area. Mattapan resident Sheara Bryant noted that the neighborhood used to be clean and nice but has become increasingly unsafe.
As of the current reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder. Reverend Peterson and the family are hopeful that with the presence of witnesses and surveillance cameras in the area, the case will be solved quickly.
