In the summer of 2020, the life of 20-year-old Christopher Lee Jennings of Hot Springs, Arkansas, was tragically cut short. On July 28, 2020, he was fatally shot. However, the circumstances of his death would not begin to come to light for several weeks. He was not reported missing until August 12, 2020, after he had not been seen since the end of July.
This report triggered an investigation that would soon uncover a grim conclusion to his disappearance.
Two days after he was officially reported as a missing person, on August 14, 2020, authorities discovered his body buried in a shallow grave in Pope County, Arkansas. The Arkansas State Crime Lab confirmed his identity on August 17, and what began as a missing person case was now a homicide investigation led by the Hot Springs Police Department. The investigation into the death of the young father would lead to the identification and arrest of five individuals who were involved in the events surrounding his death and the subsequent concealment of his body.
The investigation revealed that a group of teenagers was with Jennings when he was shot and killed. According to court documents, a 17-year-old was reportedly handling a firearm near Jennings when it discharged, leading to the fatal wound. Following the shooting, the group allegedly wrapped Jennings' body in plastic and transported him to Pope County, where they buried him in an attempt to conceal the crime. The five individuals arrested in connection with the death were John Liapis, 18; Dakota White, 18; Logan Snyder, 19; Donald Ritchey, 19; and the 17-year-old, who was charged as an adult.
The suspects faced a range of charges that included manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence, abuse of a corpse, theft by receiving of a firearm, aggravated assault, and terroristic threatening. By October of 2022, all five of the young men who were charged in connection with the death of Christopher Lee Jennings had been convicted and sentenced for their roles in the tragic events that transpired. The final defendant in the case received a seven-year prison sentence after entering a guilty plea in the Garland County Circuit Court.
