In the early morning hours of April 10, 2022, the life of 24-year-old Bernard McCarthur Jr. was tragically cut short in Hope, Arkansas. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at Northside Park at approximately 4 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered McCarthur lying in the parking lot near the park's entrance with an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency responders transported McCarthur to Wadley Regional Medical Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
During the initial investigation, police learned that a second victim, identified as 26-year-old Stevaughn Johnson of Hope, had been transported to Wadley Hospital in a personal vehicle with a gunshot wound from the same incident. Johnson was later transferred to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, Texas.
Less than a month after the fatal shooting, on May 5, 2022, the Hope Police Department made an arrest in connection with McCarthur's death. A 16-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody on a warrant for one count of Murder in the 1st Degree and one count of Engaging in Violent Criminal Group Activity. Following his arrest, the juvenile was held in a juvenile detention facility as the investigation into the incident continued.
