In the early hours of October 8, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Jakeya Hampton was tragically cut short in West Memphis, Arkansas. A young woman remembered by her sister as someone who didn't bother anyone, Hampton was a cosmetologist with a promising future. Her relationship with her boyfriend of nearly a year, Elijah Singleton, had become troubled, and she was in the process of ending it.
This attempt to move on would unfortunately lead to a fatal encounter.
On that Saturday, around 1 a.m., authorities discovered Hampton in the driver's seat of her gray Kia Optima at the intersection of Scottwood and Garden Lane. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and did not survive her injuries. An argument over a cell phone that Singleton had previously stolen from her appeared to precede the meeting he lured her into. Surveillance footage from the scene captured the chilling moments, showing Hampton's car stopping before Singleton was seen fleeing from the passenger side after firing the shots.
The search for the suspect did not last long. Later that day, police located Elijah Singleton at a nearby Budget Inn. He barricaded himself inside a room for nearly two hours, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement. Ultimately, negotiators persuaded him to surrender, and he was taken into custody. The West Memphis Police Department charged Singleton with first-degree murder in connection with Hampton's death, a crime that marked the city's seventh homicide of the year.
The legal process that followed brought a measure of closure to Hampton's grieving family and community. Elijah Singleton was convicted of first-degree murder. A Crittenden County jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, a decision the judge upheld. Singleton also received an additional 15-year sentence for the use of a firearm during the commission of the homicide, ensuring that the man responsible for the senseless act of violence would be held accountable for his actions.
