Jaterrance Wright, a 31-year-old Black male, lost his life on November 28, 2022, in a tragic event that also claimed the lives of two others in a home just outside Forrest City, Arkansas. The grim discovery was made in the early morning hours after a concerned grandmother requested a welfare check at a residence in the 500 block of Gore in the Crow Creek community. When deputies from the St.
Francis County Sheriff's Office entered the house, they found a devastating scene.
Inside the home, Jaterrance Wright, Shalanda Nicole Barton, age 34, and her 12-year-old daughter, Kelsie Marie Thompson, had all been shot to death. It appeared the victims were attacked while they were in their beds. The news of the triple homicide sent shockwaves through the community, leaving friends and family to mourn the sudden and violent loss of three lives, including a young girl who was a student at Stewart Elementary School. The Forrest City School District made counselors available to support students and staff grappling with the tragedy.
The investigation into the homicides continued for months, causing distress for the victims' families who were left without answers about who was responsible. A significant breakthrough came in February 2023 when the St. Francis County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a suspect. Jonathan Rolfe, the 17-year-old son of Shalanda Barton and brother of Kelsie Thompson, was taken into custody on February 7.
Investigators pieced together evidence that led them to Rolfe, including the discovery of his mother's stolen Cadillac near his girlfriend's home, with the key fob found in his possession. He was charged as an adult with three counts of capital murder and one count of theft of property. The sheriff described the act as "absolutely cold-blooded murder." Following his arrest, Rolfe was held without bond in a juvenile facility, and the charges brought a measure of resolution to a community haunted by the brutal crime.
