In the vast and rugged landscape of Apache County, Arizona, a chapter of frontier justice came to a violent close for Deputy Sheriff William Thomas Maxwell. At the age of 38, the male lawman found his life tragically cut short on October 8, 1901, during a fateful encounter with the notorious Smith Gang.
