In the quiet, early hours of August 4, 1965, in Youngtown, Arizona, a veteran lawman's life was tragically cut short. Herman William Nofs, a 71-year-old White male, was on duty as a Deputy Marshal for the Youngtown Police Department. A seasoned officer with 35 years of service, he had previously served with the Illinois State Police for 31 years and was a United States Army veteran of World War I. Though officially retired, he continued to serve his community by working one or two days a week.
