On a tragic day in Tucson, Arizona, the lives of a 29-year-old woman, Debbie Dietz, and her father were violently cut short. On August 7, 1989, Dietz and her father, Eugene Dietz, were at their family-owned automotive paint and body shop when her estranged boyfriend, Joseph Rudolph Wood III, entered the establishment. The relationship between Dietz and Wood had been described as tumultuous and was marked by his abusive and violent behavior, which had led her to try and end their
relationship.
That morning, Wood had called the shop to confirm that both Debbie and her father were present. After arriving, he fatally shot Eugene Dietz. Upon hearing an employee shout that her father had been shot, Debbie attempted to call for help. It was then that Wood grabbed her from behind, held a revolver to her chest, and after she pleaded for her life, he shot her twice. An employee reported hearing Wood say to her, 'I told you I was going to do it, I have to kill you,' before he fired the fatal shots.
Police officers were already at the scene when Wood exited the shop after shooting Debbie. He initially complied with their orders to drop his weapon but then picked it back up and raised it towards the officers. The officers then shot Wood several times and he was taken into custody at the scene. Joseph Rudolph Wood III was subsequently convicted on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Debbie and Eugene Dietz, as well as two counts of aggravated assault. For the murders, he was sentenced to death.
