In a quiet gated community in Mesa, Arizona, the lives of five people, including 18-year-old Shane Donovan Duffy, were tragically cut short in the early morning hours of February 21, 2006. Shane, a male, was found shot to death alongside his older brother, Steven Duffy, 30; Steven's girlfriend, Tammy Lovell, 32; and Tammy's two children from a previous relationship, 15-year-old Cassandra and 10-year-old Jacob. Neighbors alerted authorities after hearing a woman's screams and multiple gunshots.
A SWAT team later entered the home to find the horrific scene.
The investigation into the quintuple homicide soon focused on William Craig Miller, the former employer of both Steven Duffy and Tammy Lovell. The motive for the brutal slayings was determined to be an effort by Miller to silence witnesses in an arson and insurance fraud case. Steven Duffy and Tammy Lovell had been cooperating with police, providing information that implicated Miller in a fire that had been set to his own Scottsdale home in November 2005 in an attempt to collect on an insurance policy. Shane Duffy had also worked for Miller's company but was not directly involved in the arson case.
Investigators believe Miller carried out the executions to prevent Steven Duffy and Tammy Lovell from testifying against him. The other three victims, Shane, Cassandra, and Jacob, were likely killed because they were present at the time of the murders. The autopsies revealed that the victims had been shot multiple times, with some wounds indicating they were shot at point-blank range in an execution-style manner.
William Craig Miller was arrested in connection with the murders and subsequently charged with five counts of first-degree murder. In August 2011, a jury found him guilty on all counts. In addition to the murder charges, Miller was also found guilty of burglary and four counts of solicitation to commit first-degree murder, as he had attempted to hire assassins to carry out the killings. Following his conviction, William Craig Miller was sentenced to death for each of the five murders and, as of recent reports, remains on death row in Arizona.
