On a summer day in 2010, the life of 41-year-old Brian Bruce Harris, a Caucasian male, was cut short. A dedicated Deputy Sheriff with the Kane County Sheriff's Office for 19 years and a veteran of the Gulf War, he was known for his commitment to serving his community. The fatal encounter occurred on August 26, 2010, near Fredonia, Arizona, while he was assisting the Fredonia Marshal's Office in the pursuit of a burglary suspect.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Scott Curley, had
fled into the desert east of Fredonia after a burglary. As Deputy Harris and another officer tracked Curley through the rugged terrain, they were unaware that an ambush was being laid. From a concealed position beneath a tree, Curley fired a rifle from approximately 40 to 50 feet away, mortally wounding Deputy Harris. The shot was precise and deadly, and a massive manhunt for Curley was immediately launched.
For four days, Curley, who was intimately familiar with the remote desert landscape and had reportedly stashed supplies in various locations, managed to evade a force of over 100 officers from Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. During this time, he exchanged gunfire with law enforcement on several occasions, heightening the tension and the urgency of his capture. The extensive search came to a dramatic end when Curley, driven by hunger and fatigue, attempted to break into a residence to steal supplies. The homeowner quickly alerted the authorities.
Responding officers converged on the location and apprehended Scott Curley without further incident. In September 2012, he pleaded guilty to a string of charges including murder, burglary, theft, and aggravated assault. Curley was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years for his crimes. Deputy Harris, remembered as a hero and a devoted family man, was survived by his wife and two daughters. The man responsible for his death, Scott Curley, died in prison in May of 2025.
