A young man of Indian origin, Sai Teja Nukarapu had a dream of pursuing higher education in the United States, a dream he shared with his older sister who was already studying in Chicago. At 22 years old, the male student left his family in Khammam, a town in Telangana, and moved to America in the summer of 2024. He enrolled in an MBA program at Concordia University in Wisconsin and settled into a new life in Milwaukee, sharing a room with a relative.
To support himself, he took a part-time job as a cashier at a store connected to a gas station on West Burleigh Street. He kept in close contact with his family, often making video calls to his mother.
On the evening of November 29, 2024, an act of kindness would tragically alter the course of his life. After his shift at the gas station store ended, a colleague asked him to stay and cover the counter for a short while so they could go and offer prayers. Known for his friendly and helpful nature, he readily agreed. It was a decision that placed him in the path of a violent crime that would end his life just months after he had arrived in the country with such high hopes.
During the time he was covering for his friend, robbers entered the store. The assailants demanded money, and he complied with their orders, handing over the cash from the register without resistance. Despite his cooperation, the attackers senselessly shot him before fleeing the scene. The news of his violent death sent shockwaves from Milwaukee to his hometown in India, leaving his family utterly devastated and struggling to comprehend the loss of their beloved son, who was an avid cricket fan and known for his kind spirit.
In the aftermath, his family, friends, and the wider community mourned the senseless act that took his life. Officials from the Indian Consulate in Chicago expressed their shock and grief, demanding immediate action from local authorities to find and punish the culprits responsible for the murder. Arrangements were made by organizations like the Telugu Association of North America to help the grieving family repatriate his body back to India. The assailants who committed the robbery and murder have not been publicly identified, and there have been no reports of any arrests in the case.
