On November 30, 2024, 17-year-old Jose Rodriguez was fatally shot in the Alief area of southwest Houston. Rodriguez, a student at Alief Taylor High School, was walking along Caddo Lake Lane near Devonshire Drive, approximately a block from his residence, when he encountered a vehicle at an intersection. Witnesses reported that Rodriguez approached the vehicle, engaged in brief conversations with individuals on both the passenger and driver sides, and then gunfire ensued.
Sergeant Clint Ponder of the Houston Police Department indicated that multiple shooters were involved, as evidenced by numerous shell casings found at the scene. A handgun recovered at the location was believed to belong to Rodriguez. Despite efforts to obtain clearer surveillance footage, the available video was of poor quality, hindering the identification of the suspects.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a memorial was established at the intersection where Rodriguez was killed. However, on the morning of December 2, 2024, the memorial was found vandalized. A neighbor speculated that the damage occurred around 11:30 p.m. on December 1, based on surveillance footage. The memorial was subsequently rebuilt, and the family held a vigil on the evening of December 2 to honor Rodriguez's memory.
As of December 2, 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. The Houston Police Department continued to seek information from the public to assist in identifying the suspects involved in this tragic incident.
