Jaylon Reed, a 23-year-old Black man, was found shot on the Near East Side of Columbus, Ohio, on the night of December 4, 2024. Police were called to the intersection of Cole Street and Rhoads Avenue around 11:18 p.m. Medics who arrived first transported Reed to Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:48 p.m.
Homicide detectives investigating the case determined that Reed had been with 19-year-old Andre Franks Jr. at about 10:30 p.m. that evening.
According to charging documents, at some point while they were together, Franks fired a single shot from a gun, striking Reed in the back of the neck. Franks then left the area before law enforcement arrived.
Franks was taken into custody and had been in jail since December 6, 2024. Following the investigation into Reed's death, he was charged with murder. During a court appearance, prosecutors said that Franks had attempted to flee from an officer. A judge set his bond at $1 million.
In September 2026, Andre Franks pleaded guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting of Jaylon Reed. He was sentenced by the court following his guilty plea, bringing the legal proceedings in the case to a close.
