In the early morning hours of December 1, 2024, the life of 31-year-old Montrell Smith, a Black male from Baltimore, Maryland, was tragically cut short. The incident began to unfold at approximately 3:28 a.m. when Baltimore Police were dispatched to the 2200 block of North Monroe Street following a ShotSpotter alert, indicating that gunfire had occurred in the area.
Upon their arrival, officers canvassed the neighborhood but were unable to locate a victim at the scene.
A short time later, the investigation took a grim turn as a local hospital notified police of a walk-in patient suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Montrell Smith. Despite the immediate medical attention he received, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff shortly after his arrival.
Homicide detectives were called in to take control of the investigation. Their preliminary findings suggest that Mr. Smith was in the vicinity of the 2200 block of North Monroe Street when he was shot.
