In the afternoon hours of December 18, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm in the 2600 block of East Chase Street in Baltimore, Maryland. When the echo of the shots faded, 31-year-old Donte Bazemore, a Black male, was left lying with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Paramedics arrived at the scene near Luzerne Avenue Park and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased by medical staff.
Donte Bazemore was a father
of six and was described by his widow as an 'awesome father and phenomenal husband' who was a dedicated family man. His life was tragically cut short in what investigators believe was a targeted act of violence. At the scene of the shooting, police recovered two spent 9mm shell casings and one projectile. The motive for the killing remains unclear to the public.
In the months that followed the shooting, the Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit actively investigated the case. A significant breakthrough came nearly a year later, in December 2025, when authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of 41-year-old Javon Rivers in connection with Bazemore's murder. Investigators were able to identify Rivers as the suspect after reviewing camera footage from before, during, and after the shooting incident, and his identification was corroborated by witnesses.
As of early 2026, Javon Rivers remains a fugitive. The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for him, and an $8,000 reward has been offered for information leading to his capture. Online court records indicate that Rivers has a prior criminal history in Maryland dating back to when he was 17 years old, with past charges including armed robbery, conspiracy, and theft. The case of Donte Bazemore's murder underscores the ongoing issue of gun violence in Baltimore, leaving a family to grapple with the loss of a loved one as they await justice.
