On the night of Sunday, November 24, 2024, in Burlington, Iowa, the life of 28-year-old Alondro Lee Pratt of Racine, Wisconsin, was cut short by gunfire. Burlington police were called to a residence in the 500 block of S 7th Street at approximately 10:19 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds.
Pratt was found at the scene and was pronounced dead.
An autopsy would later reveal that he had been shot four times, with one of the wounds being to his chest. A second victim sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a regional hospital for treatment. The shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between two groups that had arranged to meet.
The investigation into the shooting led officials to identify 18-year-old Shermando Harper as the shooter. According to the criminal complaint, Harper emerged from the residence as the two groups met and opened fire on the victims. On Monday, December 2, U.S. Marshals apprehended Harper in Chicago on warrants from Des Moines County, Iowa. He was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder and is being held in the Des Moines County Jail.
A second individual, Kathryn F. Cable, was also arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. On Monday, December 16, Cable was taken into custody by the Burlington Police Department. She faces a charge of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
