On January 12, 2023, at approximately 8:00 p.m., 43-year-old Roberto Perez was fatally shot in Robstown, Texas. Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of East Avenue E, where they discovered Perez lying unresponsive on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Several bullet casings were found leading up to his location. Perez was transported to Corpus Christi Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed that Perez's murder was a targeted hit ordered by the Raza Unida prison gang. On September 18, 2023, authorities arrested 26-year-old John Albert Hinojosa in connection with the murder. Hinojosa confessed to driving the getaway vehicle while an accomplice exited the car and shot Perez multiple times. He also admitted to dismantling the firearm used in the crime and disposing of its parts in a wooded area.
Subsequently, on September 21, 2023, a second suspect, 22-year-old Aaron Gonzalez, was arrested for his involvement in Perez's murder. Both Hinojosa and Gonzalez were acting under orders from the Raza Unida gang to carry out the execution. Gonzalez is currently held at the Refugio County Sheriff's Jail on a $750,000 bond. Authorities anticipate making additional arrests as the investigation continues.
The arrest reports indicate that Hinojosa had multiple warrants at the time of his arrest, including charges of murder, sexual assault of a child, and assault causing bodily injury to a family member. His apprehension took place at the River Square Apartments near Interstate 37 in Corpus Christi.
Roberto Perez's death has deeply affected the Robstown community. He is remembered as a loving son, father, brother, and friend. Funeral services were held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Robstown, followed by burial at Robstown Cemetery.
The Robstown Police Department continues to investigate the case, urging anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in bringing all responsible parties to justice.
