On February 24, 2023, 20-year-old Angel Gabriel Hernandez was found deceased near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Prairie Avenue in north Harris County, Houston, Texas. Construction workers discovered his 2011 Acura engulfed in flames, and upon further inspection, Hernandez's body was located approximately 50 yards away in a wooded area. Investigators determined that Hernandez had been fatally shot, and his body had been dragged from the vehicle to the tree line.
The investigation revealed that earlier that morning, around 1 a.m., Hernandez had arranged to meet 18-year-old Javier Gonzalez-Arzate to sell marijuana and THC cartridges. During the encounter, Gonzalez-Arzate allegedly shot Hernandez, resulting in his death. After the shooting, Gonzalez-Arzate is accused of using Hernandez's phone to impersonate him, sending text messages to Hernandez's girlfriend, Morgan Vershier, in an attempt to solicit money. Vershier became suspicious due to inconsistencies in the messages, noting that the sender referred to her by an incorrect name.
Following the murder, Gonzalez-Arzate reportedly moved Hernandez's body to the passenger seat of the Acura and drove to a remote field. There, he allegedly dragged the body to a wooded area and set the vehicle on fire in an effort to destroy evidence. Surveillance footage and cell phone data placed Gonzalez-Arzate at the scene during the time of the crime. Additionally, investigators linked his phone number to a CashApp account that attempted to receive money from Hernandez's girlfriend shortly after the murder.
On May 3, 2023, Gonzalez-Arzate was arrested without incident and charged with capital murder. Initially held without bond, a judge later set his bond at $600,000. During court proceedings, Hernandez's family and girlfriend were present, expressing their grief and the impact of the loss on their lives. Vershier, now raising their daughter Gabriela without her father, described the experience as "bittersweet," noting that their daughter shares her father's eyes and temperament.
The case against Gonzalez-Arzate is ongoing, with his next court hearing scheduled for June 2023. The Harris County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hernandez's death, seeking justice for the young father whose life was tragically cut short.
