On March 20, 2023, 16-year-old Ja'Shawn Poirier was fatally shot outside Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas. The incident occurred around 6:55 a.m., before classes began, when a 15-year-old student approached a group of students near the school's entrance and opened fire with a shotgun. Poirier was struck and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Another student, a 16-year-old girl, sustained a graze wound to her face from shrapnel and was treated and released the same day.
