On April 1, 2023, 17-year-old Marquise Deshawn Williams of Waller County, Texas, was fatally shot during a birthday party in Brenham. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Tom Green Street, where a large fight broke out among attendees. Brenham Police officers responded to reports of gunfire and arrived to find numerous teens and parents fleeing the scene.
Williams and another unidentified victim were treated on-site by off-duty paramedics before being transported to Baylor Scott and White Emergency Room. Williams succumbed to his injuries, while the other victim was treated and released.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Brenham community rallied to honor Williams's memory and advocate against gun violence. A 'No Gun Violence' rally was held, featuring prayers and a balloon release attended by Williams's family. His mother, Tenisha, remembered her son as a kind and loving individual who had a passion for sports, particularly basketball.

The juvenile was charged with murder and taken into custody within the juvenile justice system.
As the legal process progressed, the suspect, identified as Jotore Jamichael Eulee Moore, was certified in June 2024 to be tried as an adult.
