Ernest Trevino Sr., a 31-year-old man from Brenham, Texas, tragically lost his life on April 10, 2017. He was fatally shot in the chest at his home in the 6400 block of Hummingbird Lane in eastern Washington County. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 11:00 p.m., and despite their efforts, Trevino was pronounced dead at Scott and White Hospital in Brenham.
The investigation into Trevino's death led to the arrest of Nicholas Royal Porter, a 20-year-old man from
Tomball, Texas. Porter was charged with murder and taken into custody without incident. During the investigation, it was revealed that Porter had driven from Tomball to Trevino's home to collect a debt of approximately $2,000. The confrontation escalated, resulting in Porter shooting Trevino in front of his children just inside the front door of the home.
Porter later confessed to the murder during questioning by the Texas Rangers. A search of Porter's home uncovered extensive drug paraphernalia, marijuana, THC "wax," prescription medications, stolen electronics, $50,000 in cash, and four firearms, including the pistol used in the murder. Porter was indicted on June 27, 2017, and subsequently pled guilty to murder on September 28, 2017. He was sentenced to life in prison by Judge Reva Towslee Corbett in November 2017.
In a subsequent development, Porter's sentence was reduced to 40 years in prison after a new trial in 2021. The court found that Porter's original attorney had provided ineffective counsel by incorrectly advising Porter that he would be eligible for deferred probation if he pleaded guilty. Porter's new sentence took into account the time he had already spent in jail.
Trevino was remembered by friends and family as a devoted father and a valued employee who had overcome a criminal past to become a responsible and caring individual. His tragic death left a lasting impact on his loved ones and the community.
