Trey Alan Kurtz, a 20-year-old white male, was found shot to death on October 30, 2014, in Brenham, Texas. Kurtz, a student at Blinn College, was discovered lying in the intersection of Seelhorst and Dark Streets near downtown Brenham. He had suffered a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Kurtz's body was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner in Austin for an autopsy.
The investigation revealed that Kurtz did not live in the area where the shooting occurred, and his car was not found nearby. Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot and seeing a car speed away from the scene.
The investigation into Kurtz's death led to multiple arrests over the following years. On October 30, 2015, exactly one year after the murder, Brenham police made the first arrest in the case. Michael Charles Dixon Jr., an 18-year-old black male from Brenham, was charged with capital murder and held on a $1 million bond. The investigation continued, and on October 25, 2016, a fourth suspect, Jordan Alexander Graves, a 20-year-old black male from Brenham, was also charged with capital murder. Graves was arrested by the Brenham Police Department's Crime Reduction Unit and held in the Washington County Jail on a $1 million bond. Two other suspects, 19-year-old Michael Charles Dixon Jr., 18-year-old J.B. Wright, and 18-year-old Deperrion Lott, all black males from Brenham, were also arrested and charged in connection with Kurtz's murder. Dixon's bond was set at $500,000, Lott's bond was $250,000, and Wright was held without bond.
