On April 1, 2023, 30-year-old Jehu Patrick Flores was fatally shot in a transient camp behind a clothing store on South Lamar Boulevard in Austin, Texas. Witnesses reported that an argument between Flores and 24-year-old Melcolm Martin Lee escalated, culminating in Lee shooting Flores once in the back of the head.
Following the shooting, Lee enlisted the assistance of 47-year-old Billy John Lamar to conceal the crime.
The two men transported Flores' body deeper into the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt, where they buried his remains.
The case remained unsolved until November 2023, when two individuals provided information to the Austin Police Department, leading investigators to the burial site. On November 29, 2023, authorities, aided by a search and rescue K9 unit, recovered skeletal remains in the greenbelt, later identified as those of Jehu Patrick Flores.
An autopsy conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Flores' death was a homicide. Subsequently, on December 12, 2023, a warrant was issued for Lee's arrest. On December 20, 2023, members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended Lee at Mable Davis Park on Parker Lane in Austin. Lee attempted to flee but was captured and booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of first-degree murder.
Additionally, Lamar was arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence and failure to report human remains. He was held on a $30,000 bond.
This case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in investigating crimes within transient communities and highlights the importance of community cooperation in resolving such cases. The arrests of Lee and Lamar bring a measure of closure to the tragic death of Jehu Patrick Flores, as the legal process continues to seek justice on his behalf.
