On May 26, 2023, 33-year-old Glenn Allan Maples of Copperas Cove, Texas, was fatally shot in Kempner. The incident occurred at a residence in the 1500 block of County Road 3340, where Maples had been visiting his friend, 43-year-old Michael Oran Woods. According to reports, an argument ensued between the two men, culminating in Woods shooting Maples as he was walking away.
Law enforcement responded promptly to the scene following a 911 call from 28-year-old Anna Brett Reid, who reported the shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Maples lying in the yard with a fatal gunshot wound to the side of his chest. A Bushmaster XM-15 rifle was discovered on the porch, and Woods was located inside the residence. Authorities secured both Woods and the firearm without incident.
During the investigation, Woods confessed to shooting Maples following their disagreement. It was also revealed that Woods is a convicted felon, which legally prohibited him from possessing a firearm. Consequently, Woods was arrested and charged with murder, a first-degree felony, and felon in possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony. He was booked into the Lampasas County Jail on the same day.
Maples was known for his hard work and dedication to his family, especially his young son, Ryder. He owned a contracting business and had a passion for motorcycles. His unexpected death has left a profound impact on his family and the local community. Funeral services were held on June 3, 2023, at Viss Family Funeral Home in Copperas Cove, followed by burial at Clear Creek Cemetery in Kempner.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, a fundraiser was established to assist with funeral expenses, reflecting the community's support for Maples' family during this difficult time.
