On May 31, 2023, 19-year-old Jonathan Rodriguez was fatally shot in Texas City, Texas. The incident occurred on Texas Avenue near Third Street, where multiple 911 callers reported the shooting, with one providing a description of a vehicle believed to be involved. Upon stopping the vehicle, police discovered Rodriguez inside, critically injured. He was transported to HCA Houston Healthcare Mainland Medical Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Rodriguez, a 2022 graduate of Dickinson Alternative Education, had overcome significant challenges to earn his diploma. Under Principal David "Mac" McConnell's guidance, he completed 30 courses in a year through an accelerated program, a notable achievement compared to the average of seven courses. Rodriguez had plans to attend college in the fall to pursue a career in anesthesiology.
In the aftermath of his death, Rodriguez's family and community expressed profound grief. His mother, Kandy Treviño, spoke of the immense suffering his loss caused, emphasizing the need to address rising crime rates in Texas City. The city had experienced an increase in homicides, with a 10-year average of five, and a notable spike to 14 in 2020.
Nearly a month after the incident, on June 28, 2023, 41-year-old Joshua Blanks was arrested in connection with Rodriguez's death. Blanks was charged with murder and additional offenses, including making terroristic threats and criminal mischief. He was detained in the Galveston County Jail with a bond set at $504,000. The arrest occurred just a block from the shooting scene, though authorities did not disclose a motive or details leading up to the shooting.
Following Rodriguez's death, Principal McConnell initiated a fundraiser to assist the family with funeral expenses, aiming to honor Rodriguez's aspirations for a traditional Native American mausoleum burial. The community's response highlighted the impact Rodriguez had on those around him and underscored the collective mourning of his untimely passing.
