On June 21, 2023, at approximately 10:01 p.m., College Station Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of Potomac Place and Southwest Parkway. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds outside a residence: 46-year-old Kelly Nicole Adams and 44-year-old Curtis Ray Dickey Jr. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as 64-year-old neighbor Charles Ray Johnson, was present at the scene and taken into custody without incident. Preliminary investigations revealed that a verbal altercation had occurred between Johnson and the victims, who were his neighbors. Johnson alleged that Adams and Dickey had previously harassed and threatened him, including tampering with his moped. On the night of the incident, Johnson claimed that after a confrontation regarding the alleged tampering, he felt threatened and shot both individuals multiple times.
Johnson was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and booked into the Brazos County Detention Center with a bond set at $800,000. This arrest marked his seventh time in the Brazos County jail. The case remains under investigation by the College Station Police Department, which has urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
The tragic deaths of Adams and Dickey have deeply affected the College Station community. Adams, remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, was known for her vibrant personality and dedication to her family. Funeral services were held on July 1, 2023, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas.
This incident underscores the devastating impact of neighborhood disputes escalating into violence, leaving a lasting void in the lives of those who knew and loved Kelly Adams and Curtis Dickey.
