On July 3, 2023, 18-year-old Gabriella Navarrete tragically lost her life in a mass shooting in Fort Worth's Como neighborhood. The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Horne Street, where a crowd had gathered following the annual ComoFest celebration. Gunmen opened fire into the assembly, resulting in the deaths of Navarrete, 18-year-old Paul Willis, and 22-year-old Cynthia Santos, and injuring eight others.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Fort Worth police launched an intensive investigation. By July 7, authorities arrested two suspects: 20-year-old Christopher Redic and 19-year-old Brandon Williams, both from Fort Worth. They were charged with murder in connection to the incident. Police Chief Neil Noakes indicated that the shooting was likely gang-related, stemming from an altercation that escalated into violence. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies were instrumental in identifying and apprehending the suspects.
Further details emerged from arrest warrant affidavits, revealing that the confrontation began with an argument involving one of the suspects, Williams, and an individual named "JoJo," who had previously threatened him. The situation escalated when another person, referred to as "Tae Tae," physically assaulted "JoJo," prompting Williams to fire the initial shots. Redic admitted to discharging his firearm approximately six times after hearing the initial gunfire, claiming he aimed above the crowd and did not believe he struck anyone.
The tragic loss of young lives, including that of Navarrete, who had recently graduated from Weatherford High School and aspired to be a makeup artist, has deeply affected the Fort Worth community.
