On July 9, 2023, in Amarillo, Texas, 38-year-old Isidra Clara Castillo was fatally shot during a police-involved incident. The event unfolded when Amarillo Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop near Northeast 9th Avenue and Grand Street, prompted by a license plate that did not correspond to the vehicle.
During the stop, officers removed the driver from the vehicle for further investigation.
While engaging with the backseat passenger, identified as 32-year-old Andrew Scott Norton, he allegedly exited the vehicle and pointed a firearm at the officers. In response, the officers discharged their weapons, resulting in Norton's death at the scene. Tragically, Ms. Castillo, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was also struck by the gunfire. She was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The incident was thoroughly investigated by the Amarillo Police Department's Homicide Unit. In September 2023, a Potter County grand jury reviewed the case, including body camera footage and other evidence, and concluded that the officers' actions were justified, issuing a no-bill decision. District Attorney Jason Herring stated that, given the circumstances, there was nothing the officers could have done differently to prevent the unfortunate outcome.
Ms. Castillo's death was a profound loss to her family and the Amarillo community. Born on October 18, 1984, she was remembered as a generous and loving individual, deeply devoted to her children and family. Her passing left a void in the lives of those who knew her, and her memory continues to be cherished by her loved ones.
