On New Year's Day, January 1, 2026, the life of 15-year-old Brynlee Elizabeth Hampton was tragically cut short in Amarillo, Texas. The incident that led to her untimely death occurred while she was in a car with a group of friends, on their way home from a New Year's Eve gathering. It was in this vehicle that she was fatally shot.
Brynlee was a sophomore at Tascosa High School, where she was an active and beloved student.
She was a member of the school's volleyball team and the National Honor Society, and also played competitive volleyball with AEV Volleyball. Deeply rooted in her faith, she was known for her kind and strong spirit, often sharing Bible verses with her family to offer encouragement and love.
In the wake of the shooting, two teenage suspects were arrested in connection with her death. Court documents identified the individuals as 17-year-old Jeremiah Matthews and 17-year-old Landry Matthews. According to witnesses, Jeremiah Matthews had been waving a gun and pointing it at other passengers in the car before the fatal shot was fired. The driver of the vehicle initially mistook the sound for a firework, until Brynlee stated that she had been shot.
Jeremiah Matthews was subsequently charged in the shooting. Landry Matthews faces a charge of tampering with evidence, after he was accused of taking the gun from Jeremiah and discarding it down the street. The investigation revealed a single bullet hole in the back of the front passenger seat where Brynlee was sitting. Brynlee's family remembers her as a loving individual who was not one to put herself in dangerous situations.
