On August 6, 2023, at approximately 4:15 a.m., Beaumont police responded to a shooting at the Crystal Grocery Shell station located at 3415 Concord Road near Delaware. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Re'Mund Jovonta Whittington, Sr., deceased at the scene. Shortly thereafter, another individual arrived at Baptist Hospital with a gunshot wound, having been transported by private vehicle.

Investigations revealed that an argument between Whittington and 33-year-old Jeremy Dixon escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in Dixon drawing a firearm and fatally shooting Whittington. Witnesses at the scene identified Dixon as the shooter.

Following the incident, police located Dixon hiding near an apartment building at the intersection of Primrose and Steelton Streets, just blocks away from the crime scene. Dixon was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. After his discharge, he was taken into custody.

Dixon was charged with murder in connection to Whittington's death. Additionally, he faced a warrant for aggravated assault/family violence from a separate incident. Bonds were set at $1 million for the murder charge and $50,000 for the aggravated assault charge.

On August 24, 2023, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted Dixon on the murder charge related to the shooting at the Shell station. The indictment followed the presentation of evidence and witness testimonies regarding the events that led to Whittington's death.

The tragic incident underscores the devastating impact of gun violence and highlights the importance of conflict resolution without resorting to violence. The community mourned the loss of Whittington, who was remembered for his vibrant personality and dedication to his family.
