On October 13, 2023, at approximately 3:45 a.m., 29-year-old taco truck owner Roberto Almaguer Garza was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at his food truck located at 8524 Gulf Freeway in southeast Houston. As he and his employees were closing for the night, two suspects approached and demanded money. A struggle ensued, during which Almaguer Garza was shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics.
The investigation led to the arrest of two individuals. On October 26, 2023, 21-year-old Jimmie Wayne Daniels was charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting. Daniels, who had a prior criminal record, was already in custody for unrelated felony offenses at the time of his arrest for this crime. Subsequent investigations identified a second suspect, 17-year-old Dominic Griffin, who was arrested on November 16, 2023, and also charged with capital murder. Authorities allege that Griffin stole and drove the getaway car used during the robbery, while Daniels directly confronted Almaguer Garza.
The tragic death of Almaguer Garza, a father of three young children, has deeply affected his family and the local community. His widow, Lorena Enriquez, expressed profound grief and frustration, particularly towards the judicial decisions that previously allowed Daniels to be released on bond despite his criminal history. The family had been working towards saving enough money to return to their hometown of Monterrey, a dream that was nearing realization before this tragedy occurred. In the wake of his death, efforts have been made to raise funds to repatriate Almaguer Garza's body to Mexico for burial.
