On December 27, 2023, at approximately 9:15 a.m., 51-year-old Morland Smith was fatally shot in the 9500 block of Scyene Road in Dallas, Texas. Smith had stopped at a local shopping center to purchase breakfast when he encountered 22-year-old acquaintance, Jamarcus Irving. As the two conversed, a red Nissan Sentra arrived, and four armed individuals exited the vehicle, immediately opening fire.
Both Smith and Irving were struck by the gunfire; Irving succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Smith was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The Dallas Police Department launched a capital murder investigation into the incident. Surveillance footage released by the authorities shows the four suspects, all appearing to be in their late teens or early twenties, dressed in dark clothing. One suspect wore a distinctive black and white hoodie with stars on the shoulders and lettering on the front, while another was clad entirely in gray. At least one of the assailants was armed with a semi-automatic rifle.
Investigators believe that Irving was the primary target of the attack, with Smith being an unintended victim caught in the crossfire. Smith's family described him as an innocent bystander who had simply stopped to get breakfast. His sister, Stephanie Sharpe, expressed her disbelief and grief, emphasizing the senselessness of the violence that claimed her brother's life.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the double homicide. The Dallas Police Department has appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the suspects, offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to their arrest and indictment.
